Any time an AI answer names your brand, whether or not it links to you.
A mention is the model saying your name. It builds awareness even without a link, and in answer engines that awareness often matters more than a click, because many searches end without one.
Mentions and citations are worth tracking separately. You can be named without being cited, and cited without being named, and the gap between the two tells you where to focus.
