AI search engines pair a language model with live retrieval, then cite the sources they used. Perplexity is the clearest example, but ChatGPT Search and Google's AI Mode work along the same lines.
For brands, the citation is the prize. Being named in the answer drives awareness, and being cited with a link drives the qualified clicks that remain.
